Winemaking notes
Unable to be labeled as bourbon or rye, Sour Mash is produced with a unique grain selection of nearly 50% corn with the remainder being rye, save a small amount of barley for fermentation, before being aged in new, charred American oak barrels and bottled at 86 proof. With this process some previously fermented mash is used as the starter for the new mash to be fermented, much like making sourdough bread. Every bottle comes from a small batch production – a unique attribute reflecting the extraordinary commitment to quality.
Viticultural notes
Michter's has three locations in Kentucky - a 78,000 square foot distillery in the Shively section of Louisville, the architecturally significant Fort Nelson Building on Louisville's Museum Row and 145 acres of farm land in Springfield.
Tasting notes
The nose lends aromas of chewy caramel and nougat, sweet stewed stone fruits, vanilla and spice. The flavors are rich and sweet with honey, butterscotch, and more vanilla, delicate eucalyptus, and bold spice with candied berries and orange peel. The finish lingers with spicy ginger, black pepper and cinnamon spice with hints of cooked fruits on the tail end.
Pairing notes
Simply outstanding on its own, on the rocks or try it in a Whiskey Sour or Whiskey Smash.
