Winemaking notes
Behind every great wine there is always a great story. In the case of Grão Vasco, this story is written in words of dedication, thoroughness, innovation, experience and passion. This story tells of the past, present and future. A beginning that goes back to the late '50s and a small regional company - called Vinícola do Super-Dão Ltd. Purchased in 1957 by Sogrape Vinhos, the company was renamed as Sogrape Vinícola do Vale do Dão. Two years later Grão Vasco was born, a wine named after the pseudonym adopted, five centuries earlier, by the famous Portuguese painter Vasco Fernandes (1480-1543). At the time, the Director of the Museu Grão Vasco in Viseu granted Sogrape's request to use the famous painter's name and painting, giving rise to the birth of a brand that has become an important symbol on the national wine scene. The portrait of St. Peter, considered his finest masterpiece, is today part of the brand's image and is displayed on its labels. After 1990, with the construction of the Quinta dos Carvalhais winemaking centre, an exemplary winery equipped to an unprecedented level for this region, the history of Grão Vasco (and the history of Dão wines) changed for good. Over the years, what began as the story of just another Dão wine, turned into much more. Treading the path of quality and innovation, Grão Vasco took on the mantle of one of Portugal's favourite wines. This outstanding position owes more than a little to the decision to open new chapters in its history, expanding the range of wines to the Alentejo and later the Douro, a truly innovative move. Today, the history of Grão Vasco is shaped by Sogrape Vinhos with the justifiable pride in creating a best-selling Portuguese wine. Grão Vasco continues to produce quality wines for anyone who enjoys and appreciates the genuine taste of Portugal's Dão wine region.
Tasting notes
Grão Vasco Dão Red is an intense ruby red colour. It has a spritely aroma of strawberries, blackberries and cherries that combines with balsamic nuances to produce an extremely appetising wine, which can be served as an aperitif or at mealtimes. Very smooth and elegant, it is a medium-bodied wine, tempting and drinkable, with round tannins and a balanced, lively acidity.
